I recently rescued a 5-year old Lab/mix and she had serious reactivity issues, did not know any basic commands and also barked a lot while inside. I live in an apartment, so I was very anxious to get help with her behaviour. I had her boarded/trained for the 5-week program. I just picked her up last week and I am so relieved that she has little to no reactivity to people, dogs or noise, she rarely ever barks and she knows commands now! I can finally walk her through the park and not avoid people or other dogs! They also crate trained her for me with my own crate, so I also love how calm and quiet she is when in her crate! She doesn't make a peep when in her crate! I just did a zoom meeting this afternoon, with her in her crate and she never made a peep! She is also sleeping through the entire night now! As other clients have also mentioned, I was also stressed out with trying to manage her behaviour inside and outside, but now we can both continue our stress-free life together! I would never have been able to train her myself, so I'm so grateful for the Shield K9 professional dog trainers!!! Kisses from Bella <3

we have 2 littermates (stupidly took adult son to pick my puppy), we have had to train them totally separately, they don't get walked together because they wind each other up & don't listen. they get to play together occasionally but its limited & monitored cos they are intact males.

I appreciate that you didn't say "How to pick a puppy..." -- Rather than the current thread title: "How to pick a Dog...". It does seem that you can eliminate some puppies, maybe based on personality traits, e.g., overly fearful... etc. To select dogs for desired/specific military/police-type qualities, it seems like it's similar to the military selection process , i.e., you can't tell if they'll meet the standards until they do.

I always advise people to get either a retriever or a lab. The only problem with those breeds is not actually the dog but the human that's attached to them and has only had that breed. I'm in the UK and almost every time I am out with the dogs I work with I bump into one and they look at every dog owner who is having trouble with their dogs with this look of contempt. Because how can you possibly go wrong!!😊

I really appreciate your deeper insights and knowledge on topics like this. I feel like we as humans, often inappropriately project our ways of thinking onto dogs. I’m watching all of your videos and reading to learn so I can have a better idea of how to help my dog succeed and which class is most appropriate. Today is day 4. Yesterday was the first time he seemed receptive to being touched. Working on building trust.

One of the best dogs I've ever met was a female pittie. Drive for days, will NEVER quit, smart and eager to please. She's from sport lines and you could see it. An athlete par excellence. One of the hardest dogs I've ever met was a pittie (?) also. Bred for looks only, but still has the low threshold. Not very smart. Anxious. He's in a home that takes great care of him but not my cup of tea at all. I agree with you. Not easy to find a good pittie, and like all intense dogs, not for every home by a long shot.

I've had 2 Dutch Shepherds that I worked the street with. Both had bonding issues. The first was a 18 month old neutered male. He would demo bite, but did not have that edge on the street. The second was at war all the time, about once every 6 months he would try to take a shot at the title.....me. 4 times. I could handle him but told the department they needed to put him down when they retired hi. They didn't and it cost the city alot of money.

Think he did use e-collar, prob cos of yappy dog, which is fair & I also would have rewarded after the kids cos he done well & was getting a bit stressed by it :) he'll be an amazing dog when there's more training under his belt :)

Thanks! I’m the trainer in this video. My timing for touching the e collar remote was terrible. Whenever I was recording this test I would get nervous haha not sure why I reached for the dial but I adjusted it. I do regret not rewarding during this test. Definitely would have helped! Since recording this test we’ve been to the same area many times practicing things in case we failed this test. He’s a lot more animated now and will actually play tug with his ball ina crowd of people. He’s such a nice dog.

The people that are worth listening to are always the most mumble and will offer you advice or constructive criticism and allow you to make up your mind about how much you will use and when and how you might use it. Those who know next to fuck all but are running on ego due to a lack of confidence due to their ignorance to their own incompetence and will always try to put you down as they can not see where you need to do things differently as they don't have enough knowledge to actually understand why you are doing what you are doing. great job! would love to see what he was like prior to training. to me it looks like the dog is uncomfortable with the suroundings. i thought scruff was up at the begining, but it stayed consistant through the video, so maybe this is how he his hair is. tail was low untill he gave some handler help, dog perked up and wagged tail. im still pretty green, so feel free to disagree with me. i love this video as i have a client dog who looks very similar in public at the moment. i would expect as time goes on this dog will become more animated and happy looking. im super impressed with the reliablity the dog showed. i would have loved to see a reward event, but i guess thats not part of tthe test. can you add reward event to the test?

Hi! I’m the trainer in this video. Super windy that day so hair probably up because of that. Prior to training this dog was chasing kids, squirrels, geese and birds with intensity. Zero leash skills. He’s generally pretty happy in this area however at the time of the test it was busier the usual and we had walked through the car area once already. He was more energetic earlier but messed up so I restarted the test. I regret not using a reward. I didn’t use the ecollar at all but at the beginning I adjusted the dial…bad timing lol was just nervous and fiddling with it.

I had him Downtown in the same area 2 days ago at a fair filled with kids and he was playing ball tug and looking so happy! Should’ve recorded the test again! Haha. He’s a lot more relaxed in a park setting as well. Thinking back he would’ve looked better had a did the test there.

Looking to possibly make the trip with a GSD rescue rehab from Louisiana. He’s not aggressive, but he doesn’t know what to do with himself. Today was my 2nd day with him. I put peanut butter in a kong to break the ice and it worked. But he seemed frightened when I tossed it. It was a 2 second reaction. He was interested in it, but then decided to run away. He seemed to want to approach me yesterday, but he just wasn’t sure. Today was definitely a huge improvement. I’m doing short sessions with him daily to try to establish a bond. I’m really enjoying your content. I really hope Luke and I can make the trip up.

Haz, You're right on the hockey analogy. And yes, the "Maple Loafs" are notorious for crapping the bed. Same with the Penguins - all 5 of their Stanley Cup teams had like 2 extra layers of hunger above what the other teams brought. The 2017 championship team was barely held together with twine, but they were way hungrier and knew how to steal one victory at a time until they stole 16 victories resulting in them getting the Cup. I remember watching that cup run in disbelief. They were eminently vulnerable but able to prevent their opponents from exploiting their vulnerabilities, the sort of things that only the most seasoned of veterans can pull off. But on years when the Penguins had super mega high powered lineups like 1993 & 2014, they would get embarrassed by a team like the Islanders or the Bruins who they typically did not match up well against regardless of who was running the team or playing on the team. Tell ya what though - it gave me an appreciation for other teams when they suddenly get hungry. 95 Devils & the 96 Avalanche - those were legendary Cup runs. The 97 & 98 Red Wings teams were a machine. Hockey is still fun to watch once you get past your home team & just love seeing the hunger of the playoffs play out.
